FAA Commercial Space Launch Act
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Commercial Space Launch Act regulates the commercial space launch industry in the United States. It delegates the FAA's Office of Commercial Space Transportation the power to oversee, license, and regulate commercial spaceflight.
Treaty on Basic Principles of Relations and Cooperation in Space Exploration and Use of Space Technologies
Though not an officially established international treaty, this concept proposes cooperation in space exploration and the peaceful use of space technologies. It supports the idea of joint programs and sharing of data among participating nations.
Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act of 2015
Also known as the SPACE Act of 2015, it encourages the private sector's engagement in space exploration by extending the regulatory learning period. It includes provisions for asteroid resource exploration and utilization, effectively recognizing the rights of U.S. citizens to own asteroid resources they have obtained.
Registration Convention
The Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space requires states to furnish to the United Nations details about the orbit of each space object. It is intended to assist in identifying objects launched into outer space.
ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations)
ITAR is a United States regulatory regime designed to control the export and import of defense-related articles and services on the United States Munitions List, which includes many space-related technologies. ITAR has significant implications for international collaboration on space technology.
Moon Agreement
The Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies expands the Outer Space Treaty to specifically include the Moon and other celestial bodies. It aims to prevent the Moon from becoming an area of conflict and governs the exploitation of its resources.
Artemis Accords
Artemis Accords are a set of principles proposed by NASA for responsible countries to follow in the exploration of the Moon under the Artemis program. They focus on peaceful exploration, transparency, interoperability, emergency assistance, and registration of space objects.
Outer Space Treaty
Also known as the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, the Outer Space Treaty forms the basis of international space law. It prohibits the placement of nuclear weapons in space and claims of sovereignty, and requires parties to explore space peacefully.
European Code of Conduct for Outer Space Activities
This is a set of non-binding guidelines proposed by the European Union aimed at fostering responsible behavior in space. It covers the prevention of space debris, increasing transparency in space activities, and cooperation to avoid harmful interference.
Liability Convention
The Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects outlines the procedures for damage caused by space objects and attributes liability to the launching state. It establishes a framework for claiming damages and resolution through diplomatic means.
Rescue Agreement
The Agreement on the Rescue of Astronauts, the Return of Astronauts, and the Return of Objects Launched into Outer Space sets out obligations to rescue astronauts in distress and to return them to the launching state, and to return space objects found beyond the territorial limits.
Homestead Act for Space
While not an officially enacted law, the idea of a Homestead Act for Space has been proposed to encourage private development and settlement of outer space by providing property rights to entities that establish permanent bases on celestial bodies.
Space Resources Exploration and Utilization Act of 2015
This act is part of the U.S. Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act and focuses on the legal framework for mining asteroids and other celestial bodies by granting U.S. citizens rights to own, transport, use, and sell resources they extract from celestial bodies.
United Nations Guidelines for the Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities
These UN guidelines were adopted to ensure the long-term sustainability of space activities. They cover the safety of space operations, the minimization of space debris, and the risks of space weather, promoting responsible conduct in space to prevent harmful interference with activities in the space environment.
Space Act of 1958
The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 established NASA and directed it to undertake civilian space exploration in addition to other duties like aeronautic research. This legislation was instrumental in driving the space race and U.S. space exploration efforts.
