Flashcards
0/7
Class O
Temperature range: > 30,000 K Characteristics: Strong ionized helium lines, weak hydrogen lines.
Class B
Temperature range: 10,000 - 30,000 K Characteristics: Helium lines present, neutral hydrogen lines reaching maximum strength.
Class K
Temperature range: 3,700 - 5,200 K Characteristics: Metal lines very strong, including neutral and singly ionized metals. Molecular bands (such as CH) start to appear.
Class A
Temperature range: 7,500 - 10,000 K Characteristics: Strong hydrogen lines, some ionized metals (Fe II, Mg II).
Class F
Temperature range: 6,000 - 7,500 K Characteristics: Weaker hydrogen lines, ionized metals (Ca II) are strong.
Class G
Temperature range: 5,200 - 6,000 K Characteristics: Ionized calcium lines very strong, neutral metals (Fe, Ca) prominent, weaker hydrogen lines.
Class M
Temperature range: < 3,700 K Characteristics: Titanium oxide bands dominate, neutral metals still present, molecular bands more noticeable.
