Absorption
The process of dampening sound energy by converting it to heat.
Diffusion
The scattering of sound waves, reducing the sense of directionality of the sound.
Reverberation Time (RT60)
The time it takes for reverberated sound to decay by 60 decibels.
Bass Traps
These are devices designed to capture low-frequency sound energy.
Standing Waves
Resonant sound waves that reinforce or cancel each other, problematic at certain room dimensions.
Sound Transmission Class (STC)
A rating used to measure a material's ability to reduce sound transmission through it.
Decibel (dB)
A unit of measurement for sound pressure level, logarithmic in nature.
Reflection
The bouncing back of sound waves off surfaces.
Flutter Echo
A rapid series of echoes caused by sound bouncing between two parallel surfaces.
Room Modes
Frequencies at which standing waves cause resonant peaks and nulls in a room's acoustic response.
Panel Absorber
A type of acoustic treatment that uses a vibrating panel to absorb sound energy, especially effective for mid to low frequencies.
Helmholtz Resonator
An acoustic device designed to absorb specific frequencies based on its cavity size, neck dimension, and amount of damping material.
Impedance
The resistance a material provides to the transmission and reflection of sound waves.
Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC)
A scalar representation of the amount of sound energy absorbed upon striking a material.
Acoustic Sealant
A flexible material used to seal gaps and joints in walls and structures to prevent sound leakage.
