Peak Particle Velocity (PPV)
PPV measures the maximum speed of the particles in a medium caused by sound waves, which is especially relevant to structural vibration caused by noise. Used in monitoring construction sites and blasting activities.
C-weighting Frequency Response
C-Weighting is a frequency weighting that has a nearly flat response over the entire audible range. It's typically used to measure peak levels of industrial noise and for assessing low-frequency content of environmental noise.
Sound Level Meter
A portable instrument that measures sound pressure level. It is used in situ to assess noise levels in occupational, environmental and architectural acoustics.
Noise Exposure Forecast (NEF)
A metric that estimates the impact of aircraft noise over time around airports. NEF accounts for the number of flights, the noise level of each, and the time of day. Used in urban planning and to address community noise complaints.
Dosimeter
A device used to measure an individual's exposure to noise over a period of time. Particularly used in occupational health to ensure compliance with noise exposure regulations.
Impulse Response
The impulse response of a space is a recording of how it reacts to a short burst of sound. It is used for room acoustics characteristics assessment and designing acoustic modifications.
Equivalent Continuous Sound Level (Leq)
Leq is the steady sound level that, in a given time period, conveys the same sound energy as the actual fluctuating sound level. It's used in environmental noise assessment and regulations.
Reverberation Time (RT)
The time it takes for the sound to decay by 60 dB after the source has stopped. It's important in architectural acoustics to assess and design the acoustic quality of rooms and spaces.
Noise Criteria (NC) Curves
A set of standard curves that represent acceptable levels of indoor noise. Used in designing HVAC systems and other building noise to ensure that noise levels are comfortable.
Frequency Weighting (A-Weighting)
A-Weighting is a method of emphasizing or de-emphasizing various frequencies to mimic human ear sensitivity. It is often used in noise level measurements to assess potential hearing damage and community noise levels.
Sound Pressure Level (SPL)
The SPL is a logarithmic measure of the effective pressure of a sound relative to a reference value. It is used to quantify the level of noises in various environments (e.g., workplaces, urban areas).
Sound Transmission Class (STC)
A rating system used to measure the transmission loss of a partition (such as walls, floors, ceilings) and its effectiveness in blocking sound. Used in building construction to indicate sound isolation quality.
Octave Band Analysis
This is an analysis of noise levels distributed across octave bands, which are frequency bands where the upper band frequency is twice the lower band frequency. Used in detailed noise analysis to tailor noise reduction measures.
Sound Intensity Level
Sound intensity level is the sound power per unit area. It differs from SPL as it is a vector quantity and considers the direction of the sound energy flow. Used for sound power measurement and source identification.
Insertion Loss
The reduction in noise level achieved by adding a barrier or silencer, measured in decibels. Used to assess effectiveness of noise control measures in industrial and environmental settings.
