Flashcards
0/20
Joule (J)
The SI unit of energy, it represents the energy transferred or work done when applying a force of one newton over a distance of one meter.
Petrophysical barrels (ppb)
Used for measuring volumes of rock that potentially contain hydrocarbons in reservoir engineering. Not to be confused with barrels of oil.
Standard cubic foot (scf)
A volume unit for measuring gas at a standardized condition of temperature and pressure, commonly used in the gas industry.
Gigajoule (GJ)
A unit of energy equivalent to one billion joules, commonly used for large-scale energy measurement in the natural gas industry.
Cubic centimeter (cm³ or cc)
A metric volume unit representing a cube that is 1 centimeter on each side, often used in chemical injections and displacement measurements.
Cubic meter (m³)
A volume unit in the metric system representing a cube with each side being one meter long. Used worldwide for gas volume measurements.
Ton of oil equivalent (TOE)
A unit of energy representing the amount of energy released by burning one ton of crude oil. Commonly used in energy statistics.
Million cubic feet (MMcf)
A large volume unit used for measuring large quantities of natural gas. One MMcf equals one million cubic feet.
Barrel (bbl)
A volume unit used to measure crude oil and other petroleum products. Equivalent to 42 US gallons.
Pascal (Pa)
The SI unit of pressure, defined as one newton per square meter. It measures the pressure exerted within pipelines or vessels.
Cubic foot (cf or ft³)
A volume unit that represents an area that is 1 foot long, wide, and high. Commonly used in the natural gas industry.
Pound per square inch (psi)
A unit of pressure representing the pressure exerted by one pound-force applied to an area of one square inch. Commonly used in drilling operations.
Gallon (gal)
Volume measurement used in the oil industry, primarily in the United States. One barrel equals 42 US gallons.
Millidarcy (mD)
A unit measuring permeability of geological formations, specifically the ability of the rock to transmit fluids.
Metric ton (MT)
A mass unit equivalent to 1000 kilograms, used globally for measuring quantities of crude oil.
British thermal unit (Btu)
A unit of energy representing the amount needed to heat one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Used in measuring energy content of fuels.
Kilowatt-hour (kWh)
A unit of energy equal to one kilowatt of power used for one hour. Often used in the context of energy production and consumption.
Therm
An energy unit equal to 100,000 British thermal units (Btu), typically used in heating and fuel consumption.
API gravity
A measure that indicates the density of petroleum liquid compared to water. The higher the API gravity, the lighter the oil.
MegaJoule (MJ)
Unit of energy in the International System of Units (SI), equal to one million joules. Often used for natural gas energy content.
