Step 6: Trimming
Trim excess fabric from around the newly pinned formation, leaving enough seam allowance for adjustments. Be cautious to maintain the integrity of the design and consider the type of finish that will be applied.
Step 7: Basting
Baste the fabric along the pin lines to create temporary stitching that holds the drape in place. Use a contrasting thread for easy removal later, and ensure stitches are even and do not distort the fabric.
Step 8: Fitting Adjustments
Evaluate the drape on the mannequin and make necessary adjustments for fit. This involves smoothing, re-pinning, re-marking, and possibly basting again to achieve the desired shape and silhouette.
Step 10: Pattern Transfer
Transfer the draped fabric onto pattern paper, tracing all marks, lines, and notations. Adjust the pattern for final corrections, add seam allowances where necessary, and mark all pieces with relevant information (grain lines, notches, labeling).
Step 9: Removal and Recording
Carefully remove the drape from the mannequin. Ensure all marks and notations are clear and sufficient for transferring the drape pattern onto paper. Record any additional notes regarding fit and design details.
Step 1: Preparation
Prepare the mannequin by covering it with a body stocking or muslin to provide a smooth surface. Ensure the mannequin is clean and in good condition, and that it accurately represents the desired body measurements and proportions.
Step 2: Block Placement
Place and secure the initial block of fabric on the mannequin. Begin by pinning at the center front or center back, and ensure the fabric’s grain is straight with respect to the floor or the guideline markings on the mannequin.
Step 4: Marking
Mark important lines and points such as darts, side seams, waistline, and neckline on the fabric while it is on the mannequin. Use tailor's chalk or a fabric marker for visibility.
Step 5: Pinning
Pin fabric pieces together along marked lines to simulate seams. Ensure the pins are placed perpendicular to the fabric edge and that seams appear clean and well-defined.
Step 3: Molding
Mold the fabric on the mannequin’s form by gently shaping it to the contours of the body. Work symmetrically and adjust the fabric to achieve the desired drape, maintaining an even tension throughout.
