Fabric Grainline and Bias Draping

On-Grain Draping
On-grain draping aligns pattern pieces parallel to the selvage, ensuring the fabric behaves consistently. This technique maintains the fabric's natural fall and minimizes distortion.
Stretch Recovery
Stretch recovery refers to a fabric's ability to return to its original size after being stretched. Fabrics with good stretch recovery drape well without permanent deformation.
True Bias
True Bias is the exact 45-degree angle to the straight grain. Garments cut on the true bias drape more softly and conform to the body's shape due to the fabric's maximum stretch capacity along this line.
Warp and Weft
Warp yarns run parallel to the selvage (lengthwise grain) and weft yarns run across the width of the fabric (cross grain). The interlacing of warp and weft affects fabric's strength and the way it drapes.
Selvage
Selvage is the tightly woven edge running parallel to the warp yarns, preventing fabric from fraying. It provides a reference for finding the straight and cross grains for proper draping.
Grainline
The grainline refers to the orientation of the yarns in a fabric. Proper alignment of the grainline affects the drape, hanging, and overall appearance of the finished garment.
Off-Grain Draping
Off-grain draping occurs when fabric is unintentionally misaligned with the grainline. This can cause uneven hang, twisting, and unflattering fit of the finished garment.
Cross Grain
The cross grain runs perpendicular to the selvage and usually has less stretch than the bias but more than the straight grain. Draping with the cross grain can provide a compromise between stability and flexibility.
Drape Coefficient
The drape coefficient quantifies how a fabric falls or hangs. Fabrics with a low drape coefficient are stiffer, while those with a high drape coefficient are more fluid and conform to the body better.
Bias
Bias refers to the 45-degree angle to the grainline of the fabric, where fabric exhibits greater stretch and fluidity. Draping on the bias allows garments to cling and flow more elegantly.
