Tracing Wheel
A tool with a serrated edge used to transfer pattern markings onto fabric, often along with tracing paper, by making dotted outlines.
Pattern Weights
Small weights used to hold a pattern in place on fabric, preventing it from moving while tracing or cutting around it.
Dress Form
A three-dimensional model of the torso used for fitting clothing that's being designed or sewn. Allows designers to see how garments will look on the body.
Seam Ripper
A tool used to cut and remove stitches without harming the fabric. It's commonly used when a mistake has been made or alterations are needed.
Pinking Shears
Scissors with a serrated blade, creating a zigzag pattern on the fabric’s edge. This prevents fraying and adds a decorative finish.
Bodkin
A tool for threading elastic, cording, or ribbons through casings and channels. It can be a pin or a tweezer-like instrument.
Thimble
A small protective shield worn on the finger that pushes the needle in sewing. It helps to prevent injuries and gives more control.
Cutting Mat
A mat with grid lines for protecting the surface underneath as well as providing measurements. It's often used in conjunction with a rotary cutter or craft knife.
Basting Tape
A double-sided adhesive tape that holds fabric temporarily in place. It's used in place of basting stitches, especially for holding zippers or hems before final sewing.
Needle Threader
A device that helps to pull thread through the eye of a needle, consisting of a thin wire loop attached to a small handle.
Sewing Gauge
A measuring tool used for small measurements when sewing, such as hems or pleats. A sliding marker allows repeated marking of the same measure.
Measuring Tape
A flexible ruler used to measure distances or sizes on fabric or a body. Essential for ensuring correct sizing and alterations.
Press Cloth
A cloth used between the iron and the fabric being pressed. It protects the fabric from heat damage and helps to avoid shininess and scorching.
Sewing Scissors
Scissors specifically designed for cutting fabric. They have sharp blades that can cut cleanly without fraying the material.
Fabric Marker
A pen specially designed for marking on fabrics without causing damage. The marks are usually washable or fade away.
Serging Thread
A type of thread used in a serger or overlock machine to create finished edges and seams. Provides stretch and strength for seams that need it.
Iron-On Interfacing
A type of material that is fused to a fabric's wrong side by heat to provide additional stability and shape. Commonly used in collars, cuffs, and facings.
French Curve
A drafting tool used to draw smooth curves, especially for armholes and necklines. Aids in pattern making and altering patterns.
Tailor's Chalk
A marking tool used to temporarily mark fabric for cutting, hemming, or altering. The marks are removed by washing or brushing the fabric.
Rotary Cutter
A cutting tool with a circular blade, which rolls across fabric for cutting. It provides a clean, straight cut and is convenient for cutting several layers at once.
