Buttons
A small fastener, typically round, used to connect two pieces of fabric by being passed through a loop or hole. Commonly used on shirts, jackets, and coats.
Zippers
A fastening device consisting of two strips of fabric with metal or plastic teeth that are joined or separated by means of a slider. Used in trousers, dresses, and bags.
Hooks and eyes
Small metal fasteners where a hook engages into an eye or loop. Suitable for securing the top of a zipper on pants and skirts, or a discreet closure on dresses.
Snaps
Fasteners made from two interlocking discs that 'snap' together. Used for closures on clothing such as bodysuits and on accessories.
Velcro
A brand name for hook and loop fasteners, it consists of two strips, one with small hooks and the other with a looped surface. Common in sportswear and children's clothing.
Laces
A cord or strap used for tying parts of garments together such as on shoes and corsets, or as a decorative element on clothing.
Toggles
Fasteners that consist of a rod-shaped button inserted through a loop of cord. Often seen on duffle coats and sporty jackets.
Grommets with lacing
Metal or plastic rings that reinforce holes in fabric for laces to pass through. Common in corsets, boots, and eyelet curtains.
Magnetic snaps
Magnets encased in fabric or leather used to close bags, clutches, and outerwear without a visible fastener.
Buckles
A clasp for fastening two loose ends, with a pin or movable bar that fits into a loop. Found on belts, strap adjustments on bags, and shoes.
Brooches
Decorative jewelry items designed to be attached to garments, often to hold them closed, such as a cape or scarf.
Tie closures
Consists of two strings or straps that are tied together to hold the opening of a garment closed, as in robes or wrap dresses.
