Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat is a temple complex in Cambodia and one of the largest religious monuments in the world, originally constructed as a Hindu temple for the god Vishnu in the early 12th century. It was later converted into a Buddhist temple.
Bayon Temple
Bayon is known for its massive stone faces, often considered to be the likeness of King Jayavarman VII or a bodhisattva. It was built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the official state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII.
Preah Vihear Temple
The temple of Preah Vihear is a Hindu temple situated on a cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, dedicated to Shiva. It's notable for its remote location and has been the subject of border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand.
Ta Prohm
Ta Prohm is a temple at Angkor, built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It has been largely left in its natural state, with trees growing out of the ruins, making it one of the most popular temples with visitors.
Angkor Thom
Angkor Thom was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer Empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII and is famous for its temples, including Bayon, Baphuon, and Phimeanakas.
Banteay Srei
Banteay Srei is a 10th-century Cambodian temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. It is renowned for its intricate carvings in pink sandstone, and its small size compared to other Angkorian temples.
The Conquest of Angkor by the Chams
In 1177, the Chams from present-day Vietnam launched a naval attack on Angkor and defeated the Khmer Empire. The event led to King Jayavarman VII's rise to power, who later reestablished control and spurred a period of intense construction, including Angkor Thom and Bayon.
Zhenla Influence on Khmer Empire
The Khmer Empire was preceded by the kingdom of Zhenla, and the early Khmer rulers are thought to have been vassals of Zhenla. The influence of Zhenla is evident in the early Khmer culture, art, and political system.
The Decline of the Khmer Empire
The decline of the Khmer Empire in the 15th century was due to a combination of factors, including wars with neighbours, over-reliance on an extensive hydraulic system for agriculture, and the eventual move of power to Phnom Penh.
The Victory Gate of Angkor Thom
The Victory Gate is one of the five gates leading into Angkor Thom, the capital city of the Khmer Empire. It was built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII and is ornamented with carvings of elephants and the four-faced Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.
