Calico Jack
John Rackham, better known as Calico Jack, is famous for designing the Jolly Roger flag, a skull with crossed swords, which is now synonymous with pirates. He operated in the Bahamas during the 'Golden Age of Piracy'. Calico Jack was also known for having two female crew members: Anne Bonny and Mary Read.
William Kidd (Captain Kidd)
William Kidd, known as Captain Kidd, was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy after returning from a voyage to the Indian Ocean. Although some modern historians believe he was unfairly condemned and may have been a privateer, his name has become synonymous with the idea of the cursed pirate treasure.
Stede Bonnet (The Gentleman Pirate)
Stede Bonnet was a Barbadian pirate, known as 'The Gentleman Pirate' because he was a moderately wealthy landowner before turning to a life of crime. Unlike most pirates, who started as sailors, Bonnet had little seafaring experience, yet he purchased a sailing vessel, which he named the 'Revenge', and turned to piracy in 1717.
Mary Read
Mary Read was an English pirate who sailed with Calico Jack and Anne Bonny. She disguised herself as a man throughout her life, first as a soldier and later as a pirate. Read's piracy career was short-lived, as she was captured and imprisoned; she died in jail, likely due to complications from childbirth.
Henry Every (Long Ben)
Henry Every, also known as Long Ben, was an English pirate who operated in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. He is most famous for capturing the Ganj-i-Sawai, a Mughal ship, which led to one of the largest pirate lootings ever recorded. His exploits prompted a worldwide manhunt, but he evaded capture and vanished mysteriously.
Anne Bonny
Anne Bonny was an Irish pirate operating in the Caribbean during the early 18th century. She was well-known for her fiery temper and her association with pirate Calico Jack. Anne was one of the few female pirates in an age when women were considered bad luck on board a ship.
Edward Low
Edward Low was a notorious English pirate known for his cruelty and violence, operating along the American east coast and throughout the West Indies. He had a reputation for particularly brutal tactics when dealing with his captives. Edward Low's pirate career lasted from 1721 to 1724.
Francis Drake (Sir Francis Drake)
Sir Francis Drake was an English sea captain, privateer, navigator, and slaver, who is best known for his circumnavigation of the world. While he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I, he was considered a pirate (‘El Draque’) by the Spanish. Drake's exploits against Spanish interests earned him a reputation as a pirate among his enemies.
Edward Teach (Blackbeard)
Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was a notorious English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of the American colonies. Blackbeard was known for his fearsome image, which he cultivated by lighting fuses in his beard during battles. He captained the Queen Anne's Revenge and terrorized the seas from 1716 to 1718.
Bartholomew Roberts (Black Bart)
Bartholomew Roberts, known as Black Bart, was a Welsh pirate who captured over 470 vessels in his piracy career. He was considered one of the most successful pirates of the 'Golden Age of Piracy'. Roberts was known for his strict discipline, his articles of piracy, and his preference for fine clothing.
