Loops and Repetition

Choreography that involves repeating a sequence of movements, often with variations to maintain interest. Used to create patterns and momentum within the dance structure.

Suite

A series of independent dances linked together into a single performance. Each section can vary in theme and style, and it's common in classical ballet and modern dance compilations.

Improvisation

A structure (or lack thereof) where dancers are free to create movements spontaneously. This is often used in contemporary dance to explore genuine reactions and original movements.

Narrative Structure

A choreographic structure that tells a story or follows a linear progression of events. This structure is often seen in ballet and contemporary dance.

Minimalism

A choreographic structure focusing on simplicity, repetition, and often a limited set of movements. Used to create a specific mood or to focus on the essence of motion.

Binary Form

A choreographic structure divided into two distinct sections, A and B, each one of them is usually repeated. Found in a lot of classical and folk dance traditions.

Theme and Variation

A single dance theme is presented and then altered in subsequent sections. Used in choreography to showcase the versatility of a core motif or idea.

Call and Response

A sequence where one group of dancers (the call) is 'answered' by another group (the response). This replicates conversational dynamics and is often used in African and folk dances.

Collage

A structure characterized by a collection of seemingly unrelated movements pieced together. It allows for a diversity of elements and can be used to convey a sense of fragmentation or abstraction.

Motif Development

The expansion and manipulation of a fundamental movement theme. Through repetition, inversion, augmentation, and other processes, motifs evolve over the course of the choreography.

ABA Form

A tripartite structure where the initial and final segments are alike (A), while the middle segment (B) is contrasting. Commonly used to create symmetry and familiarity in dance choreography.

Canon

A choreographic device where the same movements are performed by different dancers but start at different times. It creates a visual echo effect and is used for its mesmerizing and complex patterns.

Episodic

This structure features a series of sections or episodes, each of which might have a theme or stand alone. It's useful for expressing complex narratives or multiple ideas within one piece.

Tableau

A dance structure in which performers create a series of still images or posed scenes. Often used narratively to highlight dramatic moments or to emphasize visual composition.

Rondo Form

A recurring thematic element (A) appears with alternating different sections (B, C, D, etc.). This form is utilized to establish a familiar theme while exploring variations.
