Black Box Theatre
A flexible performance space, usually a simple square room with black walls, allowing for easy reconfiguration of staging and seating.
Grand Drape
The main curtain that conceals the stage from the audience, often decorative and part of the opening and closing of a performance.
Wings
The offstage areas to the right and left of the performance space where actors and crew can wait before making their entrances.
Proscenium Arch
The frame that separates the stage from the auditorium, providing the 'fourth wall' to enclose the stage area.
Trap
An opening in the stage floor which actors or scenery can pass through, allowing for dramatic entrances or exits.
Thrust Stage
A stage that extends into the audience on three sides, creating a more intimate performance space and engaging the viewers.
Backstage
The entire area out of the audience's sight, including the wings, dressing rooms, and any behind-the-scenes spaces used by performers and crew.
Grid
The network of steel beams or a framework high above the stage, used to support the rigging for the fly system.
Fly System
A network of ropes, pulleys, and counterweights used to move scenery and lighting up and down, allowing for quick scene changes.
Orchestra Pit
A sunken area in front of the stage where the orchestra performs, often adjustable to change the performance space or seating.
Apron
The area of the stage in front of the proscenium arch which extends past the curtain, often bringing actors closer to the audience.
Cyclorama
A large curtain or wall, usually curved, at the back of the stage used to create the illusion of sky or as a backdrop for lighting and projection effects.
