Belaying Pin
A removable pin inserted into holes on the locking rail to tie off ropes from the fly system. Belaying pins help secure the set's position during scene changes or when idle.
Counterweight System
A mechanism that balances the weight of the batten and the scenery, allowing it to be moved easily by stagehands. It is crucial for smooth and safe scene changes.
Fly Rail
The area where the control ropes for a manual fly system are located. Stagehands operate the fly rail to execute fly cues for scene and lighting changes.
Dead Hang
A rigging method where the object is suspended without the ability to be raised or lowered during a performance. It is used for permanent or semi-permanent installations.
Fly System
A system of ropes, pulleys, counterweights, and/or motors used to move battens or scenery up and down. Fly cues are used to execute precise scene changes or effects by flying elements in or out of the visible stage area.
Grid
The framework above the stage from which rigging systems are supported. It provides the necessary structure for rigging elements to be hung and manipulated.
Batten
A horizontal pipe used to hang scenery, lights, or other equipment above the stage. In scene changes, battens can be flown in or out to change the set elements or lighting.
Purchase Line
The rope that a stagehand pulls to raise or lower a batten in a counterweight system. Proper use of the purchase line affects the speed and control of scene changes.
Arbor
The frame that holds the counterweights in a counterweight fly system. The arbor travels vertically to counterbalance the load on the batten.
Loading Bridge
A platform where counterweights are loaded onto or removed from the arbor. It's crucial for balancing loads for safe and efficient scene changes.
Fly Loft
The space above the stage where scenery can be flown out of sight of the audience using the fly system. It allows for quick changes between scenes without visible stage activity.
Locking Rail
A rail where the rope locks of a counterweight system are mounted, allowing stagehands to secure the ropes and prevent movement of the battens during scene changes.
