Flashcards
0/30
Technical Score (TES)
The sum of the base values of all elements successfully completed by a skater or team, plus the grade of execution scores (GOE) for each element.
Program Components Score (PCS)
A set of five scores that reflect the artistic quality of a skater's performance, including skating skills, transitions, performance, composition, and interpretation of the music/theme.
Grade of Execution (GOE)
The score that reflects the quality of execution of an element, ranging from -5 to +5, with 0 indicating a 'base value' quality performance.
Base Value
The predetermined score for each element before any adjustments like GOE or penalties are applied.
Short Program
A program in singles and pairs skating that includes a specific set of required elements, each with a base value; the execution is scored with GOEs.
Free Skate
The longer program in singles and pairs skating that has more freedom in the selection of elements and is also scored based on technical and program components.
Jump Elements
Elements that involve a takeoff, rotation in the air, and landing, scored based on their base value and GOE, with added difficulty for multi-rotation or combination jumps.
Spin Elements
Figure skating movements where the skater rotates on the blade of one skate, with various positions and combinations; scored based on difficulty, number of rotations, and quality (GOE).
Step Sequence
A sequence of steps and turns judged on the variety, quality of edges and turns, rhythm, and unison in pairs/dance; adds to the TES based on difficulty and execution (GOE).
Combination Jump
A set of two or more jumps performed in succession, where each jump takes off from the landing edge of the previous jump; base value is the sum of individual jumps plus GOE.
Choreographic Sequence
A required element in the free skate program that includes movements expressing the character/music of the program, such as spirals, spread eagles, or Ina Bauers.
Fall Deductions
A penalty deduction from the total score for falls occurring during the program; typically a -1.00 deduction for each fall.
Time Violations
Deductions for skating over or under the allotted time for a program; scored as a deduction from the final score.
Costume Deductions
Penalties for non-compliance with costume regulations, including inappropriate or dangerous costumes; deductions are taken from the final score.
Music Violations
Deductions for violations related to music, such as playing music with lyrics (when not allowed) or music duration; deducted from the final score.
Illegal Element/Movement
A penalty for executing a move that is not allowed in the skater's discipline or level; results in a deduction from the total score.
Skating Skills
One of the five program components, judged on quality of skating, edge control, and flow over the ice; each judge scores out of 10, contributing to the PCS.
Transitions
One of the five program components, scored on the intricacy, difficulty, and quality of transitions between elements and movements; contributes to PCS.
Performance
One of the program components; judges the skater's expression, projection, and performance to the audience and judges, as part of PCS.
Composition
Refers to the structure of the program in skating, scored based on utilization of the ice surface, purposeful movement, and ability to combine elements; it's one of the five components of PCS.
Interpretation of the Music
One of the program components scored based on timing, expression of the music's character, and use of nuances; contributes to the PCS.
Factors
Multipliers applied to the PCS based on the segment of the competition (e.g., short program, free skate) to calculate the final score.
Levels of Difficulty
Assigned to certain elements like spins and step sequences; ranges from Level 1 to Level 4, with Level 4 being the most difficult and contributing to a higher base value.
Under-rotation
A type of jump error where the skater does not complete the required number of rotations in the air, leading to a lower GOE.
Downgraded Jump
A jump where the skater completes less than the required rotations by more than 1/4, leading to scoring the jump as one rotation less, severely impacting the base value.
Invalid Element
An element that does not fulfill requirements or is incorrectly included in the program, receiving no base value and potentially receiving a penalty.
Biellmann Spin
A spin maneuver where the skater pulls one leg up from behind to hold the blade above the head with both hands; scored higher for flexibility and position maintenance.
Lutz Jump
A toe-pick-assisted jump taken off from the back outside edge of one foot and landed on the back outside edge of the opposite foot; has a higher base value due to its difficulty.
Quadruple Jump
A highly difficult jump that includes four rotations in the air; it has a very high base value, and landing it can significantly add to the TES.
Combination Spin
A spin with at least two different positions or foot changes; base value depends on the level, positions, and maintained speed and centering.
