Pre-conventional Level: Stage 1
Age Range: Typically up to age 9 Features: Obedience and punishment orientation; acts are considered morally wrong if they are punished, not based on the nature of the act itself.
Pre-conventional Level: Stage 2
Age Range: Around age 9 Features: Individualism and exchange; recognizes that others also have needs, and being moral often means simply serving one's own needs or involves a form of market exchange.
Conventional Level: Stage 3
Age Range: Most adolescents and adults Features: Good interpersonal relationships; behavior is driven by social approval and the desire to be a 'good boy' or 'good girl'.
Conventional Level: Stage 4
Age Range: Adolescence and beyond Features: Maintaining social order; consideration is broader than one's immediate relationships and extends to the larger society, a duty to uphold laws and rules.
Post-conventional Level: Stage 5

Age Range: Rarely achieved at any specific age Features: Universal principles; ethical reasoning based on self-chosen principles, and the consideration of what a just society should be like.
