Easy
Characteristics generally include regularity in biological functions, a positive approach response to new stimuli, adaptability, and a general mood that is typically positive. Examples might be children who quickly establish regular sleeping and feeding routines, show little distress during new experiences, and display a cheerful attitude.
Difficult
Characteristics of this temperament include irregular biological rhythms, withdrawal from new situations, slow adaptability, and tendencies towards intense reactions and negative moods. Examples of difficult temperament might be children who have trouble establishing routines, are fussy and easily upset by changes, and often have a negative attitude.
Slow-to-Warm-Up
This temperament is characterized by low activity levels, somewhat negative mood, and a low intensity of mood. These children are typically cautious in the face of new situations but will gradually become more accepting with exposure. Examples include children who are initially shy or withdraw from new people and situations but become comfortable over time.
