Sensory Register
The function is to briefly hold information from the senses; has a large capacity but information only lasts for a very short period unless attended to.
Short-Term Memory (STM)
Temporarily stores information and is responsible for conscious processing of information; limited capacity (7±2 items) and duration (around 18-30 seconds without rehearsal).
Long-Term Memory (LTM)
Responsible for storing information over long periods of time; potentially unlimited capacity and duration.
Rehearsal
The process that facilitates the transfer of information from STM to LTM; can be maintenance or elaborative.
Encoding
The process of converting sensory input into a form that can be processed and entered into memory; can be visual, acoustic, or semantic.
