Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the science of designing the workplace, keeping in mind the capabilities and limitations of the worker. Application: Designing an office space to reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE refers to protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer's body from injury or infection. Application: Healthcare workers wear PPE such as masks and gloves to prevent exposure to infectious diseases.
Occupational Stress
Occupational stress is the chronic stress that people experience in relation to their work. Application: Implementing stress management programs to enhance employee wellbeing and productivity.
Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
JHA is a technique that focuses on job tasks to identify hazards before they occur. Application: Conducting JHA in a factory to pinpoint where workers are at high risk for accidents and implementing corrective measures.
Occupational Noise Exposure
Occupational noise exposure refers to the amount of sound exposure in the workplace, which can lead to hearing impairment. Application: Providing hearing protection equipment and implementing noise control measures in manufacturing plants.
Industrial Hygiene
Industrial hygiene is the science of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace conditions that may cause workers' injury or illness. Application: Conducting air quality tests to assess the presence of airborne contaminants in a chemical plant.
Workplace Wellness Programs
These programs are organized efforts and policies by employers to promote healthy behaviors among employees. Application: Offering gym memberships or in-office fitness activities to improve physical health.
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
RSI is an injury to the musculoskeletal and nervous systems that may be caused by repetitive tasks, forceful exertions, vibrations, mechanical compression, or sustained/awkward positions. Application: Modifying the workstation to reduce the risk of RSI for an individual working at a computer all day.
Lockout-Tagout (LOTO)
LOTO is a safety procedure which is used to ensure that dangerous machines are properly shut off and not able to be started up again prior to the completion of maintenance or repair work. Application: Using LOTO techniques to disable machinery during repair in a factory setting.
Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom)
HazCom is a regulation by OSHA requiring companies to inform employees about the chemicals they might be exposed to in the workplace. Application: Providing Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all hazardous substances in a laboratory.
Total Worker Health
Total Worker Health is a holistic approach to worker well-being by integrating occupational safety and health protection with health promotion. Application: A company implements policies that encompass both safety measures to prevent injuries and initiatives to promote general health, such as smoking cessation programs.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
OSHA is a federal agency that sets and enforces protective workplace safety and health standards. Application: Ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations by meeting all standards for construction safety.
Behavior-Based Safety (BBS)
BBS is a process that creates safety partnerships between management and workers with the goal of monitoring and modifying unsafe behaviors in the workplace. Application: Implementing a BBS program where employees receive training to observe and report on their peers’ safety-related behaviors.
Emergency Preparedness
Emergency preparedness is the discipline of dealing with and avoiding both natural and man-made disasters. Application: Developing and practicing evacuation procedures for all employees in the event of a fire.
Respiratory Protection
Respiratory protection is the use of respirators to protect workers from inhalation of harmful substances, such as chemicals or infectious particles. Application: Issuing N95 respirators to healthcare workers to prevent inhaling aerosolized viruses in a hospital.
