Flashcards
0/6
Control rods materials (Boron, Hafnium, Cadmium)
Materials with high neutron absorption used to control the fission rate in reactors.
Zirconium alloys
Used for cladding fuel rods due to low neutron absorption cross-section and good chemical stability.
Heavy Water (D2O)
Used as a neutron moderator and coolant in some reactors; has a lower neutron absorption cross-section than regular water.
Graphite
Moderator material that slows down neutrons to thermal energies, increasing the likelihood of U-235 fission.
Uranium-235 (U-235)
A fissile material used as fuel, can sustain a nuclear chain reaction.
Plutonium-239 (Pu-239)
Another fissile material produced from U-238 in reactors; used in some fuel types and weapons.
