Scintillation Detector
A scintillation detector measures ionizing radiation by using a scintillating material which emits light when excited by ionizing radiation, and a photodetector which converts the light to an electrical signal.
Ionization Chamber
An ionization chamber measures ionizing radiation by collecting the electric charges produced by ionization of the gas within the chamber through the application of an electric field.
Geiger Counter
A Geiger counter detects ionizing radiation by measuring the pulses produced when gas molecules are ionized within a Geiger-Müller tube. Each detected particle contributes to a count.
Semiconductor Detector
Semiconductor detectors measure radiation by the generation of electron-hole pairs in a semiconductor material when ionizing radiation passes through it. The charge is then collected and measured.
Proportional Counter
A proportional counter is a type of gas-filled radiation detector that not only counts particulate radiation but can also measure its energy. It operates in the 'proportional' range of the gas amplification curve.
