Nuclear Power Plants
8
Flashcards
0/8
Fuel Rods
Contain the nuclear fuel, usually Uranium-235 or Plutonium-239, where the fission reaction takes place.
Containment Building
Encloses the reactor core and other components, providing a barrier to the release of radioactive materials in case of an accident.
Steam Generator
Converts the heat from the coolant into steam that can drive a turbine to generate electricity.
Coolant
Transfers heat from the reactor core to the steam generator or directly to turbines in some designs.
Pressure Vessel
Houses the reactor core and the coolant, maintaining the high pressure required for the coolant to remain liquid at high temperatures.
Turbine
Converts the thermal energy from steam into mechanical energy.
Control Rods
Used to control the rate of the nuclear reaction by absorbing neutrons and can be raised or lowered into the reactor core.
Moderator
Reduces the speed of neutrons, making them more likely to cause fission when they collide with fuel nuclei.
