Arm
To provide support for the upper parts of the microscope, used for carrying.
Objective lens
To gather light from the sample and magnify the image.
Condenser
To focus the light onto the specimen.
Diaphragm or Iris
To adjust the amount of light passing through the specimen.
Base
To support the microscope and house the light source.
Stage
A platform that supports the specimen slide being observed.
Eyepiece (Ocular lens)
To magnify the image formed by the objective lens and to view the image by the observer's eye.
Body tube
To hold the eyepiece and objective lenses at the correct distance from each other.
Light source
To illuminate the specimen from below.
Coarse focus knob
To make large adjustments to the focus.
Slide holder
To secure the slide in place on the stage.
Aperture
The hole in the stage that allows light to pass through and reach the specimen.
Fine focus knob
To make small adjustments to the focus, refining the image clarity.
Revolving nosepiece or Turret
To hold multiple objective lenses and to easily switch between them.
Mechanical stage
To hold the slide and allow precise movement in the X and Y axes.
