The Earth's Atmosphere Layers
5
Flashcards
0/5
Exosphere
Altitude range: Above 600 km; Characteristics: Upper limit of the atmosphere, extremely thin air, where atoms and molecules escape into space, transition zone between Earth's atmosphere and outer space.
Mesosphere
Altitude range: 50-85 km; Characteristics: Meteors burn up in this layer due to collision with gas particles, temperature decreases with altitude, coldest layers of Earth's atmosphere.
Thermosphere
Altitude range: 85-600 km; Characteristics: Temperature increases with altitude, can reach up to 2500°C or higher, very thin air, layer where the International Space Station orbits.
Troposphere
Altitude range: 0-12 km; Characteristics: Contains about 75% of the atmosphere's mass and 99% of its water vapor and aerosols, temperature decreases with altitude, weather phenomena occur in this layer.
Stratosphere
Altitude range: 12-50 km; Characteristics: Contains the ozone layer which absorbs and scatters ultraviolet solar radiation, temperature increases with altitude due to ozone absorption of UV radiation.
