STL
Usage: Widely used for 3D printing prototypes and is also applicable in Virtual Reality. Characteristics: Contains only geometric information about the surface of a 3D object, without color or texture.
PLY
Usage: Storing 3D data from 3D scanners in Virtual Reality. Characteristics: Can store data in both binary and ASCII formats, and supports a variety of property types.
USDZ
Usage: Used by Apple for sharing and displaying augmented reality content. Characteristics: A zero-compression, unencrypted zip archive that can contain USD files with materials, animations, and more.
COLLADA
Usage: Interchange file format for interactive 3D applications. Characteristics: XML-based, managed by the Khronos Group, designed to be application-neutral and facilitate 3D asset exchange.
DXF
Usage: 2D and 3D drawing exchange format, used in virtual reality for design visualization. Characteristics: Created by Autodesk, it works with a wide range of programs and supports vector image data and metadata.
X3D
Usage: Replacement for VRML, used to represent 3D graphics on the web and in Virtual Reality environments. Characteristics: XML-based file format, extensible and supports scripting and animation.

Usage: Commonly used for 3D geometry representation in Virtual Reality. Characteristics: Text-based file format that includes mesh information and optionally texture mapping.
FBX
Usage: Used for animation, 3D models, and virtual reality applications. Characteristics: Binary file format that can carry all important scene data such as meshes, animations, and materials.
GLTF
Usage: Efficient delivery of 3D models and Virtual Reality content. Characteristics: Described as the 'JPEG of 3D', it is an open standard format that includes an easily parsable JSON descriptor.
VRML
Usage: An older format for 3D scenes to be used in Virtual Reality. Characteristics: Text file format that is human-readable, and was an early attempt to define virtual worlds online.
