The Water Cycle
8
Flashcards
0/8
Transpiration
The release of water vapor from plants and soil into the air.
Runoff
The flow of water - from rain, melting snow, or other sources - over the land surface toward water bodies such as streams, rivers, and lakes.
Sublimation
The transition of water directly from a solid to gas phase, without passing through the liquid phase.
Deposition
The water vapor to ice phase change, where gas turns into solid directly, such as the formation of frost.
Precipitation
Any form of water - liquid or solid - falling from the sky, including rain, snow, sleet, and hail.
Evaporation
The process by which water is converted from liquid to gas and enters the atmosphere.
Condensation
The process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water, forming clouds.
Infiltration
The process by which precipitation or water soaks into subsurface soils and moves into rocks through cracks and pore spaces.
