Flashcards

Alpine Glacier
Glaciers found in mountainous regions that flow down valleys. E.g., the Mer de Glace in the French Alps.
Continental Glacier
Massive ice sheets that cover expansive land areas. E.g., Antarctica and Greenland.
Ice Cap
Smaller than ice sheets, these are dome-shaped glaciers found in polar and subpolar regions. E.g., the Vatnajökull ice cap in Iceland.
Piedmont Glacier
Forms when steep valley glaciers spill into relatively flat plains. E.g., Malaspina Glacier in Alaska.
Outlet Glacier
Channels of ice that flow more quickly than the ice surrounding them, extending from ice caps or ice sheets. E.g., Jakobshavn Isbræ in Greenland.
Hanging Glacier
Occurs when an alpine glacier flows off a steep cliff or slope, often creating waterfalls of ice. E.g., Hanging Glacier on Mount Edith Cavell, Jasper.
