Straight Buttonhole
A simple slit in the fabric reinforced with stitching around the edges. It can be hand sewn or machine-made.
Keyhole Buttonhole
Has a round end to accommodate the shank of a button, making it perfect for thicker fabrics or heavy coats.
Bound Buttonhole
Made by creating a fabric loop around the slit, giving a neat finish that is often used in high-end tailoring.
In-seam Buttonhole
This type is integrated into a seam of the garment, camouflaging the buttonhole within the construction.
Vertical Buttonhole
Similar to a straight buttonhole but cut vertically; best for thick fabrics where a horizontal buttonhole may gape.
Loop Buttonhole
Created using a loop of cord or fabric; more decorative than functional and often seen on dresses or lightweight tops.
Rouleau Buttonhole
A buttonhole created from a narrow tube of fabric that's usually hand stitched; adds a delicate, couture touch.
Welt Buttonhole
Made by constructing a small fabric welt around the buttonhole; often found in men's suiting for a clean, finished look.
