Button
A small disc or knob sewn onto a garment, used to close or secure it, often made of plastic, metal, wood or shell.
Snap Fastener
A pair of interlocking discs commonly used in place of buttons to fasten clothing and for similar purposes.
Tie
A method of fastening wherein a cord, rope, or strap is wrapped around itself or another piece and knotted, commonly used on drawstring bags and hoodies.
Hook and Eye
A simple fastening device, with a hook catching on a loop or eye, often used in skirts and bras.
Rivet
A permanent mechanical fastener. Before being installed, a rivet consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. The end opposite the head is called the buck-tail.
Velcro
Consists of two strips of fabric, one with tiny hooks and the other with tiny loops, which attach to each other when pressed together.
Toggle
A fastener consisting of a rod or pin, typically made of wood or plastic, that is inserted into a loop of cord or leather.
Zipper
A fastening device consisting of two strips of fabric tape, each with a metal or plastic series of teeth, that are interlocked by a slider.
Buckle
A flat frame with a hinged pin, used for joining the ends of a belt or strap.
Grommet
A ring or edge strip inserted into a hole in the material, commonly used to prevent tearing or abrasion and to cover sharp edges of the punched hole.
