Common Fabric Defects

Flashcards
0/15
Bird's Eye
Small, repeating, dot-like defects visible on the fabric surface. Possible causes: foreign fibers incorporated or warp/weft snarls.
Barcode
Repeated series of light and dark bands on the fabric. Possible causes: variation in yarn density or reed marks.
Bow
A lateral curve in the weft of woven fabric. Possible causes: uneven tension or off-center warp yarns.
Skew
Distortion in the fabric where weft yarns are not at right angles with warp yarns. Possible causes: improper winding or skewed tension.
Tear
A rip or cut in the textile material. Possible causes: mechanical damage or mishandling during processing.
Float
A weaving defect where warp or weft yarns float over multiple adjacent weft or warp yarns. Possible causes: incorrect loom setting or operator error.
Broken Pick
A missing weft yarn in a section of fabric. Possible causes: weft yarn breakage or loom malfunction.
Shade Variation
Differences in color consistency across the fabric. Possible causes: dyeing process inconsistency or uneven yarn dye uptake.
Oil Stain
Marks or spots appearing greasy or discolored. Possible causes: machinery lubricants or processing oils contact with the fabric.
Slub
Thicker place in yarn resulting in a lump in fabric. Possible causes: irregular spinning or issues in raw material quality.
Yarn Variation
Differences in yarn thickness or color. Possible causes: variations in raw material or inconsistency during yarn manufacturing.
Wrinkling
Unwanted folds or creases in the fabric. Possible causes: incorrect finishing processes or poor handling.
Pilling
Formation of small balls of fiber on the surface of the fabric. Possible causes: abrasion during normal wear and care.
Stain
Undesirable and distinct marks on the fabric. Possible causes: chemical or substance spills during the manufacturing process.
Tension Variation
Uneven stress on the yarns leads to irregularities in fabric. Possible causes: improper tension control during winding or weaving.
