Overlock Stitch
A type of stitch that sews over the edge of one or two pieces of cloth for edging, hemming, or seaming. Usually done with a serger.
Basting Stitch
A temporary stitch primarily used to hold pieces of fabric together before final sewing and is removed after the permanent stitch is made.
Zigzag Stitch
A back-and-forth stitch used where stretch is needed in the seam or to prevent the edges of a fabric from unraveling.
Blanket Stitch
A decorative stitch often used to finish the edge of blankets, it creates a border that is both functional and decorative.
Backstitch
A strong stitch used for joining seams in fabric where strength is needed. This stitch goes backward on the front side and forward on the reverse side.

French Knot

Stretch Stitch
A stitch specifically made for use with stretchy fabrics that maintains elasticity. It’s often a modified zigzag or straight stitch.
Slip Stitch
Also known as 'ladder stitch'. A stitch used to create an invisible seam between two folded edges or to close an opening.
Catch Stitch
A criss-cross stitch used on the wrong side of the fabric to 'catch' the edge down, used in hemming.
Topstitch

Running Stitch
A basic stitch made of up-and-down stitches that 'run' along the fabric. Commonly used for hand sewing and quilting.
Straight Stitch
The most basic stitch on a sewing machine, used for simple seams and topstitching. It’s a straight line with no width.
Lockstitch
Created by the sewing machine’s needle and bobbin thread interlocking beneath the fabric, offering a sturdy stitch for seams.
