Christopher Columbus
Columbus made four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain: in 1492, 1493, 1498, and 1502. He is credited with the discovery of the New World, believing he had reached Asia.
Marco Polo
Traveled the Silk Road and reached China in the late 13th century. His voyages are detailed in 'The Travels of Marco Polo' and opened up the East to Europe.
Ferdinand Magellan
Magellan's expedition from 1519 to 1522 became the first to circumnavigate the globe and proved that the world is round.
Vasco da Gama

Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador. He crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, becoming the first European to lead an expedition to have seen or reached the Pacific from the New World.
Juan Ponce de León
A Spanish explorer and conquistador known for leading the first official European expedition to Florida and the first governor of Puerto Rico. He is associated with the legend of the Fountain of Youth, reputed to be in Florida.
Abel Tasman
Known for his voyages in 1642 and 1644 in the service of the Dutch East India Company, he was the first known European explorer to reach the islands of Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) and New Zealand.
Jacques Cartier
French explorer who claimed what is now Canada for France. He was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River.
John Franklin
A British Royal Navy officer and explorer of the Arctic. Franklin led his last expedition in 1845 in attempt to traverse the last unnavigated section of the Northwest Passage, but the expedition met with disaster and the entire crew perished.

A French Navy officer and explorer whose expedition vanished in Oceania.
Willem Barentsz
A Dutch navigator and explorer, a key figure in the golden age of Dutch navigation and exploration. He is best known for his three expeditions to the far north in search of a northeast passage.

A Spanish explorer and conquistador who led the first European expedition deep into the territory of the modern-day United States, and is the first European documented to have crossed the Mississippi River.
