Hygiene and Medicine
Hygiene practices were minimal due to lack of knowledge; bathing was infrequent. Medicine was based on the humoral theory, and treatments often included bloodletting and herbal remedies.
Entertainment and Leisure
Common entertainments included music, dancing, festivals, and theatre. The wealthy could enjoy more private forms of entertainment like banquets, hunting, and reading.
Urban Life vs. Rural Life
Urban areas were centers of trade, education, and culture, and typically offered more opportunities for social mobility. Rural life was mostly agricultural and feudal systems of governance still prevailed.
Art and Literature
Renaissance art and literature were marked by a focus on humanism and the classical world. Artists like da Vinci and Michelangelo depicted more realistic human forms, and writers like Dante explored human experience.
Clothing and Fashion
The Renaissance was characterized by elaborate clothing, often used to display social status, with materials like silk and velvet reserved for the wealthy. Sumptuary laws regulated apparel according to one’s social position.
Family and Marriage
Marriage was often arranged to strengthen alliances and for economic reasons. Dowry was significant, and the average age to marry was mid-twenties for men and early twenties for women.
Education
Education saw a transformation with the rise of humanism. The wealthy were educated in classics, philosophy, and arts. The printing press allowed for greater distribution of books.
Religion
Christianity, specifically Catholicism, was the dominant religion influencing all aspects of life. The Church held significant power, but the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century began to challenge its authority.
Gender Roles
Society was patriarchal with distinct gender roles; men were involved in public life and women were expected to manage household duties. Education for women was limited, mostly to affluent families.
Architecture
Renaissance architecture emphasized symmetry and proportion, inspired by the classical Roman and Greek architecture. Notable structures include the cathedrals of Florence and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Daily Work
Most people were peasants working on farms, but trade and craftsmanship flourished in cities. Guilds regulated trades and artisans like blacksmiths, weavers, and painters were common.
Diet and Cuisine
The diet was predominantly based on cereals, bread, and pasta. The wealthy enjoyed more diverse food including meat and sugar. Spices were luxuries and used extensively in recipes.
