Doshas
In Ayurveda, the three doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha - represent different energies that govern physiological activity. In spa and wellness, treatments can be personalized based on an individual's dominant dosha to restore balance and promote health.
Panchakarma
Panchakarma is a cleansing and rejuvenating program for the body, mind, and consciousness. In spa settings, it may involve a series of treatments like massage, steam baths, and herbal therapies to detoxify and balance the body's energies.
Ayurvedic Diet
Ayurvedic nutrition focuses on eating according to one's dosha and the seasons. Spas may offer meal plans that support the digestive fire (Agni), are dosha-balancing, and use lots of herbs and spices, promoting overall wellness.
Abhyanga
Abhyanga is a form of Ayurvedic oil massage that involves the gentle but firm rubbing of the body with large amounts of warm oil. It is said to enhance blood circulation and draw out toxins, and spas may offer it to nourish and rejuvenate the skin and body.
Marma Points
Marma points are vital points on the body where two or more types of tissue meet. Spas may offer therapies focused on stimulating these points to promote healing and energy flow throughout the body.
Shirodhara
Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda therapy involving gently pouring liquids over the forehead. It is commonly used in spas for its deeply relaxing and calming effect, which is believed to help treat a variety of conditions like headaches and stress.
Ayurvedic Herbs
Ayurveda uses a vast range of medicinal herbs with various health benefits. In spas, herbal remedies might be customized for clients to help with issues like stress, skin conditions, and immune support, often in the form of teas, oils, or direct application.
Pranayama
Pranayama consists of breath control exercises that are said to influence the flow of prana (life energy) in the body. Spas may teach these techniques to promote relaxation, improve respiratory efficiency, and balance the body and mind.
Yoga
Yoga is an ancient practice that combines postures, breathing techniques, and meditation. In the context of a spa, yoga can be tailored to clients' doshas to promote flexibility, muscle strength, and stress relief, and enhance overall wellness.
Takra Dhara
Takra Dhara is a sub-type of Shirodhara, which involves pouring buttermilk over the forehead. This treatment can be found in spas to cool and soothe the scalp and skin, making it particularly beneficial for those with Pitta imbalances.
Rasayana Therapy
Rasayana therapy involves the use of Ayurvedic techniques to rejuvenate the body and prolong life. Spa treatments might include detoxification, nourishing the skin, and using rejuvenating herbs to enhance vitality and immunity.
Dinacharya
Dinacharya refers to the Ayurvedic daily routine designed to align natural cycles and balance doshas. Spa experts can guide clients in crafting personal routines, including wake-up time, eating schedule, exercise, and self-care practices.
