Ontological Commitment
Ontological commitment refers to the claim by a theory or philosophical position about what entities must exist for the theory to be true.
Accident
In metaphysics, an accident is a property that has no necessary connection to the essence of the thing being described.
Existence
Existence in metaphysics means the state of being real or having actuality and is often considered universally applicable to everything that is.
Universals
Universals are abstract properties or relations that can be instantiated by many different particulars. They address the problem of how one property can exist in many places at the same time.
Causality
Causality is the relationship between an event (the cause) and a second event (the effect), where the second event is understood as a consequence of the first.
Mind-Body Problem
The mind-body problem concerns the relationship between mind and matter, and specifically the relationship between consciousness and the brain.
Essence
Essence is the set of attributes that make an entity what it fundamentally is, and without which it loses its identity.
Potentiality and Actuality
Potentiality refers to the capacity to develop into something in the future, whereas actuality is the realization of these potentialities, as defined by Aristotle.
Objectivity
Objectivity in metaphysics refers to the property of being true independently of individual thought or perception.
Monism
Monism is the view that asserts that all of reality is reducible to one thing or kind. It contrasts with dualism and pluralism.
Particulars
Particulars are individual objects or instances in the world, as opposed to universals, which characterize properties shared by multiple particulars.
Modality
Modality in metaphysics refers to the status of propositions in terms of possibility, necessity, and contingency, often using modal logic to express such qualifications.
Being
Being refers to the existence of something; anything that can be said 'is'. In metaphysics, it's a fundamental category.
Time
Time in metaphysics is a dimension in which events occur in a sequence from the past through the present to the future. Philosophers debate over its true nature and its relation to space.
Possible Worlds
Possible worlds are a metaphysical concept that represents a way the world might have been. They are used to interpret modal notions like possibility and necessity.
Identity
Identity in metaphysics concerns the question of what it means for something to be the same despite change or distinct from all other things.
Substance
Substance in metaphysics refers to that which exists by itself and is the most fundamental existence. It's intrinsic to objects and doesn't rely on anything else to exist.
Space
Space in metaphysics is often considered a three-dimensional continuum in which objects are located and events occur. The nature, structure, and composition of space are topics of debate.
Free Will
Free will is the metaphysical doctrine that conscious agents have the ability to choose different possible courses of action unimpeded.
Teleology
Teleology is the philosophical study of design, purpose, and direction in nature. It considers the ends or purposes that entities aim to achieve.
