Flashcards
0/15
Supine
A position of the body lying face up. Example: Bench presses are performed in a supine position.
Medial
Towards the midline of the body. Example: The ulna is medial to the radius.
Posterior
Denotes the back side of the body. Example: The scapula (shoulder blade) is positioned on the posterior side of the human body.
Superior
Above or at a higher level (toward the head). Example: The nose is superior to the mouth.
Plantarflexion
Movement of the foot that flexes it downward toward the sole. Example: Pressing the gas pedal involves plantarflexion of the foot.
Inferior
Below or at a lower level than another part of the body. Example: The stomach is inferior to the heart.
Proximal
Closer to the origin of a structure or to a point of attachment. Example: The proximal end of the femur is near the hip joint.
Distal
Farther from the origin of a structure or from a point of attachment. Example: The distal end of the humerus is near the elbow joint.
Anterior
Denotes the front side of the body. Example: The sternum (breastbone) is located on the anterior side of the human body.
Sagittal Plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into right and left parts. Example: When performing a lunge, the movement occurs in the sagittal plane.
Coronal Plane
An anatomical boundary that divides the body into dorsal and ventral (back and front) sections. Example: Raising arms to the side at shoulder level occurs in the coronal plane.
Prone
A position of the body lying face down. Example: Push-ups are performed in a prone position.
Transverse Plane
A horizontal plane that divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions. Example: Rotational movements of the trunk occur in the transverse plane.
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body. Example: The lungs are lateral to the heart.
Dorsiflexion
Flexion of the foot in the direction of the dorsum (upper surface). Example: When walking on your heels, the action of the foot is dorsiflexion.
