Canoeing Paddle Strokes
10
Flashcards
0/10
Forward Stroke
Reach forward with the paddle and immerse the blade fully in the water, pulling back through the water alongside the canoe, then repeat.
J-Stroke
Similar to the forward stroke, but at the end of the pull, twist the paddle to form a 'J' shape, pushing the water inward to keep the canoe straight.
Sweep Stroke
Use a long, sweeping stroke from the bow of the canoe toward the stern, forming a wide arc, to turn the canoe.
Draw Stroke
Reach out to the side of the canoe and pull the water toward you, dragging the canoe sideways.
Pry Stroke
Place the paddle vertically in the water on the side of the canoe and push the water away from the canoe, prying off the gunwale if necessary.
Cross Draw Stroke
From the opposite side of the kayak, reach over the canoe with the paddle and pull the water towards yourself to move the canoe laterally in that direction.
Sculling Draw Stroke
Move the paddle blade back and forth in a horizontal figure-eight motion under the water's surface to draw the canoe sideways.
Reverse Stroke
Push the paddle forward from the stern toward the bow, with the paddle blade immersed, to slow down or reverse the canoe's direction.
Low Brace
With the paddle held horizontally and the knuckles facing downward, apply a downward pressure on the surface of the water to stabilize the canoe.
High Brace
With the paddle held horizontally and the knuckles facing upward, apply an upward pressure against the water's surface to right the canoe if it's tilting.
