Yosemite Bowline
Purpose: Create a fixed loop like a bowline with added security. How to Tie: Tie a bowline, then take the tail around the outside of the loop and back down through the knot's nipping turn.
Butterfly Knot
Purpose: Create a secure loop in the middle of a rope without access to the ends. How to Tie: Create a loop, twist it twice, then pass the middle of the twisted section through the initial loop.
Prusik Knot
Purpose: Ascend a rope or create a friction hitch. How to Tie: Loop a smaller diameter cord around the larger climbing rope multiple times and pass the end through the original loop.
Bachmann Knot
Purpose: A friction hitch that is useful for ascending ropes. How to Tie: Wrap a loop of cord around the climbing rope, place a carabiner through the loop, and use the carabiner to wrap the cord around the rope.
Bowline
Purpose: Forms a fixed loop at the end of a rope. How to Tie: Make a small loop, pass the end of the rope through it, wrap around the standing part, and then back down through the loop.
Klemheist Knot
Purpose: Alternative to the Prusik for ascending a rope. How to Tie: With a loop of webbing or cord, make a series of wraps around the main rope and pull the end through all the wraps.
Figure-Eight Follow-Through
Purpose: Connect the climbing harness to a rope. How to Tie: Create a loop, twist it, and pull the working end through to make a figure-eight. Put the end through the harness and retrace the figure-eight with the rope.
Triple Fisherman's Knot
Purpose: Join two ropes together with extra security over the double fisherman's. How to Tie: Similar to the double, but wrap each end around the other rope three times before passing through the middle.
Double Fisherman's Knot
Purpose: Join two ropes together securely. How to Tie: Overlap the two rope ends, then wrap each end around the other twice, threading each end through the loops formed.
Water Knot
Purpose: Join two ends of webbing. How to Tie: Overlap the ends, tie an overhand knot with one end, and follow the path with the other end in reverse.
Munter Hitch
Purpose: Belaying or rappelling with minimal gear. How to Tie: Pass a bight of rope through a carabiner, twist the bight and clip it back into the carabiner.
Girth Hitch
Purpose: Attach a loop of webbing or a sling to an anchor or harness. How to Tie: Pass a loop through the attachment point, then pass the other end of the loop through itself.
Overhand Knot
Purpose: Create a stopper or prevent the rope from fraying. How to Tie: Make a loop and pass the end of the rope through it. Pull tight to secure.
Clove Hitch
Purpose: Attach the rope to a carabiner or a post. How to Tie: Make two opposing loops and stack them, then clip or slide them onto the object you're attaching to.
Alpine Butterfly Loop
Purpose: Securely forms a loop in the middle of a rope. How to Tie: Twist a loop on the rope and make a second twist within the first, then pull a loop from the second twist through the first one.
