Duck Dive
A technique used by surfers to push their surfboard under an oncoming wave in order to pass beneath it without being swept back by the wave.
Wipeout
When a surfer falls from their board and is washed by the wave, typically in a turbulent and uncontrolled manner.
Regular Foot
A surfer stance where the left foot is placed forward on the board while surfing.
Swell
A series of mechanical waves that propagate along the interface between water and air; generated by distant weather systems.
Choppy
When the surface of the water is rough or has a lot of small waves, typically due to winds, making surfing conditions less ideal.
Nose
The front tip or forward-most part of the surfboard.
Tail
The rear end of the surfboard which comes in various shapes and affects the board's maneuverability.
Rip Current
A strong, narrow current heading from shore back to sea, which can be dangerous for swimmers but useful for surfers to get past breaking waves.
Hang Ten
A classic surfing maneuver which involves the surfer walking to the nose of the board and hanging all ten toes over the nose of the longboard.
Glassy
A term used to describe very smooth, mirror-like water surface conditions, ideal for surfing.
Frothing
Surfer slang for being extremely excited about the surf conditions or the act of surfing itself.
Lineup
The area where surfers wait for waves, located beyond the breaking waves and where the waves are starting to form peaks.
Onshore Wind
Wind blowing from the sea towards the land, which can cause the waves to become choppy and less ideal for surfing.
Barrel
A hollow part of the wave that forms as it breaks, creating a tube-like space when the crest of the wave envelops the water surface beneath.
Pop-Up
The rapid transition from lying on the board to standing, a critical maneuver in catching and riding waves.
Leash
A cord that attaches from the tail of the surfboard to the surfer's ankle, preventing the board from being swept away.
Goofy Foot
A surfer who rides the waves with their right foot forward, as opposed to the regular stance where the left foot is forward.
Cutback
A surfing maneuver that brings the surfer back to the breaking part of the wave, typically after moving down the line on a face wave.
Aerial
An advanced surfing move where the surfer and board leave the surface of the wave and become airborne.
Offshore Wind
Wind blowing from the land out to sea, which helps to shape and hold up the waves, making them cleaner and more suitable for surfing.
