Backward Skating
To skate backwards, begin with a slight forward motion, then glide on one foot while bringing the other foot parallel. Look over your shoulder and bend your knees for balance.
Glide
Gliding is moving smoothly across the ice with minimal effort. To perform, stand straight with knees slightly bent, push off gently from one foot and balance on the other.
Toe Loop Jump
A jump that takes off from the back outside edge while the other toe picks into the ice for assistance, followed by rotation in the air and landing on the same toe pick.
Spiral
A move where the skater glides on one foot with the free leg lifted and extended above the hip level, often while the torso leans in the opposite direction for balance.
Crossover Turn
A maneuver used to turn corners or skate in curves. Cross one skate over the other while turning, shifting weight smoothly to maintain balance.
Salchow Jump
A figure skating jump named after inventor Ulrich Salchow. From a backward inside edge, leap and spin in the air, landing on the back outside edge of the opposite foot.
Sit Spin
A spin where the skater bends one knee and holds the other leg extended, as if sitting on an invisible chair. The torso is upright and arms are often outstretched.
Forward Swizzle
A basic skating move where a skater pushes their feet outward and then inward in a 'fish' motion. Keep your knees bent and push from the inside edges of the skates.
Lutz Jump
A jump initiated from the outside backward edge while picking with the opposite toe, followed by a spin in the air, and landing on the reverse outside edge of the takeoff foot.
Hockey Stop
A technique to stop quickly by turning feet sideways and bending the knees. It creates a scraping of the ice surface. Keep your center of gravity low.
