Library of Congress Classification (LCC)
An alphanumeric system to arrange materials by subjects using letters and numbers. Examples: Q for Science, QA for Mathematics.
Universal Decimal Classification (UDC)
It combines features of the Dewey Decimal system with those of the colon classification. Allows linkage of subjects. Example: 51 for Mathematics.
Bliss Bibliographic Classification (BC)
A library classification system that is notational, synthetic, and hierarchical. It uses combinations of letters and numbers. Example: L for Education.
Colon Classification (CC)
A classification system based on the use of colons to separate different classification elements. Designed for use in libraries in India. Example: R for Medicine.
Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
A numerical system using 3-digit whole numbers for main classes with decimal extensions for more specific categories. Examples: 500 for Science, 510 for Mathematics.
Moys Classification Scheme for Legal Materials
A classification system specifically designed for law collections. It arranges materials by jurisdiction and then subject. Example: KM for law of England and Wales.
Chinese Library Classification (CLC)
A library classification system employed in China, which uses a combination of Chinese characters and Arabic numerals. Example: I for Literature.
New Classification Scheme for Chinese Libraries (NCC)
Developed to accommodate the rapid growth of knowledge, it replaces the CLC in some Chinese libraries. Example: T for Industrial Technology.
Superintendent of Documents Classification System
A system used to organise publications of the U.S. government. It is based on the originating agency. Example: L for Department of Labor.
National Library of Medicine Classification (NLM)
A system used for the organization and classification of medical and health-related sciences. Example: QS for Human Anatomy.
