Swarm
A large group of bees that leave the parent colony to form a new colony. Swarming is a natural method of colony reproduction.
Drone
The male honeybee, whose primary role is to mate with a virgin queen. They do not collect pollen or nectar.
Apiary
A location where beehives are kept, can consist of one or many hives.
Uncapping Knife
A heated knife used to slice the wax cappings off of honeycomb to prepare for extraction.
Entrance Reducer
A piece of equipment used to reduce the size of the hive entrance, protecting against robbing and helping maintain hive temperature.
Queen Excluder
A selective barrier inside the hive that allows worker bees through but prevents the queen from laying eggs in honey supers.
Hive Tool
A versatile steel tool used by beekeepers to pry apart hive bodies and scrape wax and propolis from hive components.
Honey Extractor
A mechanical device used to extract honey from honeycombs without destroying the comb.
Foundation
A pre-made sheet of beeswax or plastic that gives bees a head-start on building comb.
Langstroth Hive
The most commonly used hive design in beekeeping, it's a vertically modular hive with removable frames.
Smoker
A device used to generate smoke which calms bees and reduces their aggressive behavior during hive inspections.
Propolis
A sticky substance that bees collect from tree sap used to seal cracks in the hive and to varnish comb cells.
Nuc
Short for 'nucleus colony', it's a small bee colony created from larger colonies, usually with its own queen.
Bee Suit
Protective clothing worn by beekeepers to prevent stings while working with bees.
Queen Rearing
The process of breeding and raising new queen bees.
Varroa Mite
A serious pest of honeybee colonies that feeds on the bodily fluids of larvae and adult bees.
Bee Brush
A soft-bristled brush used to gently remove bees from frames, typically during honey harvest or inspections.
Brood Chamber
The part of the hive where the queen bee lays eggs and the young bees (brood) are raised.
Pollen Trap
A device used to collect pollen from bees as they enter the hive, often used for pollination research or dietary supplements.
Bee Space
The small gap that bees naturally leave between their combs, about 1/4 to 3/8 inches, which is crucial in hive design.
