Flashcards
0/10
Amorphosis
Exhibits little or no metamorphosis. Insect development stages include egg, nymph (resembling the adult), and adult.
Adult Stage
The final stage in insect development. Adults have fully developed wings and reproductive organs, and their primary function is to reproduce.
Holometabolism
Also known as complete metamorphosis. Insect development stages include egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
Hypermetamorphosis
A complex form of metamorphosis characterized by different larval stages that lead to the pupa and then adult. Each larval stage has distinct behaviors and sometimes morphologies.
Larval Stage
A stage in the development of insects undergoing holometabolism. Larvae are typically worm-like and have a different diet and habitat than the adult.
Hemimetabolism
Also known as incomplete metamorphosis. Stages include egg, various nymphal instars or naiads in the case of aquatic insects, and adult.
Paurometabolism
A type of metamorphosis similar to hemimetabolism. Stages include egg, several nymphal instars, and adult, with the nymphs gradually assuming adult features.
Direct Development
A process wherein the insect develops from egg to adult without distinct larval or pupal stages.
Pupal Stage
A transitional stage in holometabolous insects where the insect is typically encased in a cocoon or pupal case and undergoes metamorphosis into the adult form.
Egg Stage
The first stage in insect development. It is the stage where embryogenesis occurs.
