Rule of Thirds
A compositional technique where the image is divided into nine equal segments by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. This technique is effective because it encourages the artist to place points of interest along the intersections or along the lines, which often creates a more balanced and engaging piece.
Contrast
Contrast is a compositional technique involving the juxtaposition of opposing elements (light vs. dark, large vs. small). Contrasting elements can highlight key features and create focal points. It's effective because it draws the viewer's eye and can add drama and interest to a piece.
Scale and Proportion
Scale refers to the size of elements in the artwork relative to each other, while proportion refers to the relative size of parts of a whole within an element. Proper use of scale and proportion can result in a realistic or intentionally stylized depiction. It is effective because it can manipulate the viewer’s perception and create a sense of harmony.
Golden Ratio
Mathematically, the Golden Ratio is approximately 1.618:1. In art, it's used to create aesthetically pleasing proportions and it's believed to be effective because it's a ratio that frequently appears in nature, which the human eye tends to find naturally appealing.
Hierarchy
Hierarchy in composition refers to the elements being arranged in a way that clearly shows their order of importance. This is effective because it allows the viewer to understand the narrative or message more easily, guiding them through the visual elements in intended order.
Figure-Ground Relationship
This refers to the relationship between the subject (the figure) and the surrounding space (the ground). A well-defined figure-ground relationship can lead to a composition that feels stable and well-organized. It is effective because it helps viewers instantly recognize the main subject.
Framing
Framing involves using elements within the artwork to create a 'frame' around the central subject. This draws attention to the subject and can add depth to the composition. It's effective because it isolates the subject in a way that is visually engaging and directs the viewer's focus.
Balance
Balance in composition is the distribution of visual weight, either symmetrically or asymmetrically, to create stability in the artwork. It is effective because it provides a sense of structure and helps to create a harmonious and pleasing experience for the viewer.
Leading Lines
This technique uses natural lines or shapes within the composition to lead the viewer's eye towards the main subject of the artwork. It is effective because it provides a visual pathway for the viewer's eye to follow, creating a sense of movement and depth.
Symmetry and Asymmetry
Symmetry involves mirroring elements on either side of a composition to create balance, while asymmetry achieves balance through contrast and tension without mirroring. Both can be effective by either instilling a sense of harmony and order for symmetry or dynamic balance and visual interest in the case of asymmetry.
