Pixel
The smallest controllable element of a picture on the screen. Pixels are the building blocks of digital images, where each pixel represents a single point in the image.
Vector Graphics
A type of graphic that uses mathematical equations to represent images in computer graphics. They are scalable without loss of quality, making them ideal for logos and other designs that need to be resized frequently.
Bitmap
A type of memory organization or image file format used to store digital images. The term bitmap comes from the computer programming terminology, meaning just a map of bits, or specifically a 'spatially mapped array of bits'.
Moiré Pattern
A visual perception that occurs when viewing a set of lines or dots that is superimposed on another set of lines or dots, where the sets differ in relative size, angle, or spacing.
Anti-aliasing
A technique used in digital imaging to reduce the jagged edges of an image, which occur when curves are represented on the pixel grid. It works by averaging the colors at the edges to create a smoother transition.
Dithering
A digital image processing technique used to create the illusion of color depth in images with a limited color palette. It works by scattering pixels of different colors across an image to simulate a new color.
Rendering
The process by which a computer processes information from a coded data source and uses that information to produce and display an image.
Color Depth
The number of bits used to represent the color of a single pixel in a bitmapped image or video frame buffer, which determines the number of distinct colors that can be displayed.
Raster Graphics
Digital images that are made up of a rectangular grid of pixels. They can lose quality when scaled up or down, which is why they are best used in a dedicated size.
Layer
In digital art software, a layer is a separate level that can contain images or objects. Layers can be used to separate different elements of an image and edit them independently without affecting other elements.
Resolution
The amount of detail an image holds, typically measured in pixels per inch (PPI) for digital images or dots per inch (DPI) for printed images.
Alpha Channel
An additional channel in a digital image that is used to store information about transparency. It allows for varying degrees of transparency in the pixels of the image.
