Basic Stroke
Basic strokes are the foundational elements of brush calligraphy which include upstrokes, downstrokes, overturns, underturns, and compound curves. To apply these, use light pressure for thin upstrokes and heavier pressure for thick downstrokes, maintaining a consistent angle and fluid motion.
Bounce Lettering
Bounce lettering gives a playful, irregular feel by varying the baseline of the letters. Apply this technique by intentionally positioning some letters slightly higher or lower than the baseline, while maintaining legibility.
Pressure Transition
Pressure transition is the skill of smoothly varying pressure on the brush to transition between thick and thin lines. Practice by gradually applying more pressure on a downward stroke and slowly releasing as you move upward.
Consistency
Consistency refers to maintaining uniformity in style, size, and form throughout your calligraphy. Apply by setting guidelines and stick to them, repeatedly practicing the alphabet to ensure uniform appearance.
Connecting Letters
Connecting letters is about creating fluidity between letters in a word. Apply this technique by starting the upstroke of a letter where the previous letter's downstroke ends, ensuring that your pen does not leave the paper until the word is completed.
Brush Angle
Brush angle affects the thickness of your strokes. Hold the brush at a consistent angle relative to the paper, usually between 45 to 60 degrees, to create uniform strokes. Vary the angle to adjust stroke width.
Shading
Shading adds depth and dimension to letters. Apply by using a darker color or a second layer of ink on parts of letters where natural shadows would occur, typically on downstrokes and at the overlap of letter components.
Faux Calligraphy
Faux calligraphy mimics the look of brush calligraphy by manually adding thickness to the downstrokes of letters. To apply it, write your letters normally and then draw additional lines on the downstrokes, filling them in to create the illusion of brush calligraphy.
Flourishing
Flourishing involves adding decorative curves and loops to letters, especially at the beginning and end. To apply, practice extending ascenders or descenders with elegant swashes and ensure they complement the overall composition without cluttering it.
Letter Spacing
Letter spacing involves the consistent distribution of space between letters for visual harmony. Apply by practicing a rhythm of spacing that complements the width of your letters, ensuring even readability throughout your piece.
