Understanding Color Theory
To mix inks successfully, one must have a basic grasp of color theory, which includes knowing how primary colors combine to create secondary colors, and how adding white or black can lighten or darken a hue, respectively.
Maintaining Ink Consistency
Mix inks gently to maintain consistency and prevent air bubbles. Use a circular motion with a spatula or a mixer, and make sure the mixture is homogeneous before use.
Test Mixing on a Palette
Always mix a small test batch of inks on a mixing palette or a piece of scrap paper to ensure the color matches your expectation before committing to a larger quantity.
Ratio Precision
For replicable results, use precise ratios when mixing inks. Document the ratios of each color used to be able to duplicate the exact shade for future projects.
Ink Compatibility
Not all inks are compatible with each other. Test for chemical compatibility before mixing different brands or types of inks to ensure that they do not react negatively or compromise the writing quality.
