Feedback
Feedback involves the effective exchange of information about performance or understanding. To improve, use constructive and specific feedback, encourage a two-way dialogue, and focus on behaviors rather than personal characteristics.
Conflict resolution
This is the process of resolving a dispute or disagreement in a constructive manner. Techniques include active listening, identifying underlying needs or concerns, and collaborating to find mutually satisfying solutions.
Patient-centered communication
This approach prioritizes the patient’s individual preferences, concerns, and values. Techniques for enhancing patient-centered communication include inviting patient input, tailoring discussions to patient preferences, and involving the patient in decision-making processes.
Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. Techniques for improving empathy include active listening, imagining yourself in the patient's situation, and expressing understanding of their feelings.
Nonverbal communication
Nonverbal communication refers to body language, facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice. To improve, one can be mindful of their own nonverbal cues, learn to read patients' nonverbal behaviors, and ensure their nonverbal signals match their verbal messages.
Active listening
Active listening involves fully concentrating, understanding, responding, and then remembering what is being said. Techniques for improvement include practicing focused attention, avoiding interruptions, and reflecting back on what the speaker has said.
Clarity and simplicity
This entails using clear, straightforward language when communicating with patients. To improve clarity, use simple language, avoid medical jargon, and check for understanding.
Cultural competency
This is the ability to understand and appropriately respond to the cultural cues of patients. Enhancing cultural competency can be achieved through education about cultural practices, avoiding stereotypes, and showing respect for cultural differences.
Privacy and confidentiality
Respecting patient privacy and confidentiality is crucial in building trust. Improvement techniques include being aware of privacy laws, sharing information only with relevant parties, and doing so in a private setting.
Patient education
Effective patient education ensures that patients understand their conditions and treatments. Improvement can be made by tailoring the information to the patient's level of understanding, using teach-back methods, and providing written materials.
