Flashcards
0/8
Hall's High Context and Low Context Cultures
This model defines cultures based on their communication styles: high-context cultures rely heavily on implicit communication and context, whereas low-context cultures communicate explicitly. Key components include communicative cues and the role of the environment in communication.
Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions Theory
A framework for understanding cultural differences across six dimensions, including individualism vs. collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, power distance, masculinity vs. femininity, long-term orientation, and indulgence vs. restraint.
Anxiety/Uncertainty Management Theory
This theory suggests that effective intercultural communication depends on the management of anxiety and uncertainty. Key components include motivation, the degree of uncertainty, interpretation and response, and the potential for anxiety reduction.
Social Identity Theory
Explores how people's self-concepts are shaped by their group membership and categorization. Key components include social categorization, social identification, and social comparison.
Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis
This hypothesis posits that the structure of a language determines or greatly influences the modes of thought and behavior characteristic of the culture in which it is spoken. Key components are linguistic determinism and linguistic relativity.
Bennett's Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS)
A model that outlines the stages of sensitivity and competence in intercultural communication, from ethnocentrism to ethnorelativism. Key components include six stages of development: denial, defense, minimization, acceptance, adaptation, and integration.
Communication Accommodation Theory
This theory suggests that individuals adjust their communication styles to others during social interaction, including intercultural exchanges. Key components are convergence, divergence, and intergroup dynamics.
Face-Negotiation Theory
Explores how cultural differences in face (public self-image) affect communication. Key components include face maintenance, conflict management styles, and self-construal.
