Flip Book Animation
A booklet with a series of images that vary gradually from one page to the next so that when the pages are turned rapidly, they animate a motion.
Paint-On-Glass Animation
Artists paint on sheets of glass with each frame being a modification of the previous one. Well known for its fluid and expressive quality.
Stop Motion
This technique involves photographing physical objects one frame at a time with slight changes in between. Examples are 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' and 'Wallace & Gromit'.
Claymation
A form of stop-motion animation using malleable clay figures. A famous example is 'Wallace & Gromit'.
Sand Animation
Artists create images in the sand on a lightbox or glass table that are then captured frame by frame. Examples include live performances and short films.
Zoetrope Animation
An early form of motion picture projection that uses a spinning cylinder with images inside, viewed through slits. Used as a novelty or experiment in modern times.
Skeletal Animation
A technique in computer animation in which a character is represented in two parts: a surface representation and a hierarchical set of interconnected bones used for animating. Examples include most modern video games.
Typography Animation
In this style, animated text conveys a message or creates an artistic effect. Examples include lyric videos and kinetic typography presentations.
Anime
A distinctive style of animation originating from Japan, known for its colorful graphics, fantastical themes, and vibrant characters. Examples are 'Naruto' and 'Spirited Away'.
Traditional Animation
Also known as cel animation, this technique involves drawing each frame by hand. Examples include classic Disney movies like 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'.
Flash Animation
This method uses Adobe Flash (now Animate CC) to create web-based animations that are vector-based and often interactive. An example is the web series 'Homestar Runner'.
Digital 2D Animation
This form combines traditional 2D animation principles with digital technology. Software like Toon Boom and Adobe Animate are used.
Mechanical Animation
Animation that involves creating movement with mechanical parts or machines. Often used in explainer videos for products or machinery.
Mixed Media Animation
This style blends various techniques or materials, such as live-action with animation or 2D with 3D. Examples include 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' and 'Space Jam'.
2D Vector-Based Animation
This technique involves the use of vector graphics, which are scalable and can be manipulated easily. Examples include Flash animations and games.
Experimental Animation
This refers to unconventional techniques that do not conform to standard or traditional animations. It often explores new concepts and visual ideas.
Photo Cutout Animation
This method uses photographs cut into shapes, which are then animated to tell a story or create interesting visuals.
Motion Graphics
This style primarily combines text and images in dynamic and interesting ways, often for informational or promotional purposes. Examples are film title sequences and animated logos.
Puppet Animation
A type of stop-motion animation but specifically using puppets. Examples include 'The Dark Crystal' and 'Coraline'.
Augmented Reality Animation
A technique that overlays computer-generated animation onto the real world through a device, creating an interactive experience. Used in apps like Pokémon GO.
Pin Screen Animation
A screen filled with movable pins, which can be pushed in or out by pressing an object onto the screen, creates different shadows and depth, frame by frame.
Cut-Out Animation
This technique uses flat characters and backgrounds cut from materials like paper. An example is 'South Park'.
Rotoscoping
Animators trace over live-action footage frame by frame for a realistic motion. Films like 'A Scanner Darkly' used this technique.
Computer Animation (3D Animation)
This style uses computer graphics to create three-dimensional scenes and characters. Examples include Pixar movies like 'Toy Story' and 'Finding Nemo'.
Limited Animation
A style that economizes on the number of frames and movements to lower costs. Often used in TV cartoons like 'The Flintstones'.
